Intercal Language Guide

INTERCAL (Compiler Language With No Pronounceable Acronym) is an esoteric programming language designed to be as different from conventional languages as possible, often intentionally obscure and humorous.

Primary Use Cases

▸Esoteric language experimentation
▸Humorous programming challenges
▸Teaching unconventional programming concepts
▸Code obfuscation contests
▸Studying Turing-completeness in non-standard languages

Notable Features

▸Unusual syntax including COME FROM, . (dot) operators, and unconventional keywords
▸Turing-complete despite bizarre design
▸Strongly emphasizes programmer confusion for humor and challenge
▸No resemblance to conventional programming languages
▸Memory and control flow manipulation in non-intuitive ways

Origin & Creator

INTERCAL was created in 1972 by Don Woods and James M. Lyon at Princeton University as a satirical take on programming language design.

Industrial Note

INTERCAL is primarily used for entertainment, programming jokes, esolang experiments, and educational exercises in thinking differently about programming constructs.

Quick Explain

▸INTERCAL uses unconventional syntax and operations, such as COME FROM statements and non-standard operators.
▸It is Turing-complete, meaning it can theoretically compute anything conventional languages can, despite its intentionally confusing design.
▸The language is a parody, created to poke fun at the complexity of traditional programming languages.

Core Features

▸COME FROM statements for control flow
▸Non-standard arithmetic and logical operations
▸Use of INTERCAL-specific operators like .1 and .2
▸Mandatory use of statements like PLEASE to modify program politeness
▸Lack of conventional loops and conditionals as in C or Python

Learning Path

▸Learn INTERCAL keywords and operators
▸Practice writing simple output programs
▸Experiment with COME FROM statements
▸Build arithmetic and control flow examples
▸Explore obfuscated and humorous programming patterns

Practical Examples

▸Print 'Hello, world!' in INTERCAL
▸Implement addition or multiplication of numbers
▸Use COME FROM to control execution flow
▸Demonstrate use of PLEASE keyword
▸Obfuscate code intentionally for humor or challenge

Comparisons

▸INTERCAL vs Brainfuck: Both are esoteric; INTERCAL is verbose and obscure, Brainfuck is minimalistic
▸INTERCAL vs Python: INTERCAL is humorous and confusing, Python is practical
▸INTERCAL vs Malbolge: Both intentionally difficult, Malbolge is self-altering, INTERCAL is absurdly verbose
▸INTERCAL vs C: INTERCAL is parody, C is structured low-level
▸INTERCAL vs JavaScript: INTERCAL is educational/entertaining, JS is production-ready

Strengths

▸Humorous and challenging for programmers
▸Great for understanding Turing-completeness in absurd contexts
▸Encourages creative thinking about programming design
▸Supported by interpreters for experimentation
▸Strong community of esolang enthusiasts

Limitations

▸Extremely difficult to read and write
▸Not suitable for practical programming
▸Sparse documentation and few tutorials
▸Code can be intentionally nonsensical
▸Learning curve is steep due to unusual syntax

When NOT to Use

▸Real-world software development
▸Performance-critical applications
▸Collaborative coding projects
▸Tasks needing libraries and frameworks
▸Projects requiring readability and maintainability

Cheat Sheet

▸COME FROM - unconventional control flow
▸PLEASE - politeness level affecting compilation
▸.1, .2 - non-standard operators
▸FORGET - clears variables
▸IGNORE - used for control manipulation

FAQ

▸Is INTERCAL free?
▸Yes - open-source interpreters are available.
▸Can INTERCAL perform real computation?
▸Yes - Turing-complete but impractical.
▸Is INTERCAL easy to learn?
▸No - intentionally difficult and confusing.
▸Are there modern interpreters?
▸Yes - C-INTERCAL and online interpreters exist.
▸Is INTERCAL used professionally?
▸Rarely; mostly for humor, education, and esolang experimentation.

30-Day Skill Plan

▸Week 1: Understand syntax, operators, and PLEASE keyword
▸Week 2: Implement simple programs (Hello World, arithmetic)
▸Week 3: Use COME FROM for control flow
▸Week 4: Experiment with complex, obfuscated programs
▸Week 5: Attempt humorous or code-golf style INTERCAL programs

Final Summary

▸INTERCAL is an esoteric and humorous programming language.
▸Turing-complete with intentionally confusing syntax and semantics.
▸Primarily used for education, humor, and esolang experimentation.
▸Features COME FROM statements, PLEASE keyword, and non-standard operators.
▸Encourages creative thinking and understanding of programming principles in absurd contexts.

Project Structure

▸src/ - INTERCAL source files
▸examples/ - humorous or classic INTERCAL programs
▸tests/ - output verification scripts
▸docs/ - explanations of syntax and operators
▸tools/ - optional interpreters or compilers

Monetization

▸Rarely monetized directly
▸Educational workshops or courses
▸Code-golf competitions with prizes
▸Esolang tutorials or books
▸Online platforms hosting humorous challenges

Productivity Tips

▸Plan control flow before coding
▸Test small segments incrementally
▸Keep politeness consistent
▸Use interpreters with debugging support
▸Reuse code patterns for repetitive logic

Basic Concepts

▸Memory cells: store numeric values
▸COME FROM: unconventional control flow mechanism
▸PLEASE: politeness keyword affecting compilation
▸Operators: non-standard arithmetic/logical operators
▸Statements: typically confusing or humorous keywords
